Almost every day I walk to my day job through woody, magical forests, and almost every night I strive to reflect this simple peacefulness in my textile art. I use my sewing machine to guide my intuition on the material I am working with and just as in nature, I have learned to take chances with my pieces and not be afraid to stretch, cut, dye or even re-invent my work as I move through my creative process. My favourite poet Mary Oliver writes, “Said the river, imagine everything you can imagine, then keep on going.”
My goal is to reflect the lessons I have learned through the unpredictability of my needle and thread using texture, colour, natural fibres and dyes, floss and found objects. My textile art is guided by the ebb and flow of the seasons, which have allowed me the freedom to not expect a specific outcome, but rather experience the process through stitched, drawn or painted elements. As in life, my finished pieces are never how I imagined them to be.
Gillian has spent many years learning to be an artist. Only recently has she found her niche in using textile and thread to transpose her imagination onto her fabric canvases. Textile art has allowed her to morph many of the mediums she has dappled in over the years (theatre, poetry, painting, interior decorating) into abstract and realistic depictions of nature.
Gillian considers herself an emerging artist and attributes her artistic “metamorphosis” to the connective threads of her life: her profound love for her children and family, the patience and serenity of nature and each challenge life throws her way.
Although art is not her full-time job, Gillian is fortunate to have a career at Laurentian University that engages her and provides the stability she needs to support her family and create art for herself. Throughout her career she has consistently brought her artistic flair to the workplace and has often used art as a foundation for creativity and innovation in leading and facilitating meetings and professional development sessions.
When she isn’t creating, Gillian and her life partner are experiencing nature by foot, ski or paddle.
