Introduced to art and painting at a very early age by his father who enjoyed dabbling in both oil and watercolour, Garth also attended lessons at the now closed Willistead Art Gallery, and in high school. Garth has deep roots on Manitoulin Island, and although a seasonal resident now, still has family living here. This was combined with growing up as a “Tobacco Lake” kid, spending days exploring every nook and cranny as well as working in the summers in his grandmother’s business, The Gore Bay Recorder.

 Garth's paintings reflect his love of Manitoulin, which is primarily the source of his subject matter. 

 He travels for inspiration and paints for enjoyment and relaxation.
