Artist Statement

Working in oil, I explore the Canadian landscape, rural and urban, and the effect of light on this changing landscape. Capturing the moment of light crossing a field vision is my aim. Many of my paintings are done outside. The excitement and challenge of painting a live scene invigorates me whether it’s the facade of a house or the vast expanse of the La Cloche Mountains.

Biography

Award-winning artist Karin Fediw is from Toronto and regularly vacations north of the city in Wasaga Beach and beyond. Her weekends are spent finding new materials and views to paint. An avid plein air painter, she can be found painting out of doors all summer long.

As a life-long learner, she has focused her attention on art, learning from a variety of teachers and artists in a number of different venues including the Hermitage in Russia, Haliburton School of the Arts, Ontario College of Art and Design, Centennial College, Franklin Carmichael Art Group, Neilson Park Creative Centre, and The McMichael Collection.

Her outdoor studio includes natural settings such as the Canadian Shield, Georgian Bay, the Humber River, and the Haliburton Highlands. During the winter months, she takes up the challenge of creating art from her own reference material, and restating smaller plein air works as larger paintings.

Karin has exhibited in group and solo shows in galleries including McMichael Art Collection, Mississauga Art Gallery, Toronto Public Library, Arts Etobicoke, Quest Gallery, Franklin Carmichael Art Centre, Carrier Gallery, and Todmorden Mills. Selected awards include Kleinburg Village Urban Scene Prize, McMichael Art Collection En Plein Air competition, 2018; Quick Paint Prize, Brant Colours, 2018; Best in Show, La Cloche Art show, 2015; Best Oil Painting, La Cloche Art Show, 2013 to 2015; Sunnybrook Hospital Christmas card fundraiser, 2018;  Best in Show, Franklin Carmichael Art Group Open Juried Show, 2013.
